How much pension lump sum could you take?
For pension arrangements using the fund-based route, the maximum retirement lump sum is generally 25% of the fund. Occupational schemes may instead calculate benefits using salary and service, so the correct option depends on the arrangement and scheme rules.
Irish retirement lump-sum tax bands
| Lifetime retirement lump sums | Income Tax treatment |
|---|---|
| First €200,000 | Tax-free lifetime amount |
| €200,001 to €500,000 | 20% Income Tax |
| Above €500,000 | Taxed under PAYE at the higher rate; USC may also need to be considered |
The limits apply across retirement lump sums received from all sources, rather than separately to every pension. Enter earlier retirement lump sums so the calculator can allocate the current illustration across the remaining bands.

What it does not decide
It does not confirm that benefits can be taken now, calculate a salary-and-service lump sum, value a defined-benefit pension, test the Standard Fund Threshold or include possible USC on amounts above €500,000. Taking cash also reduces the fund available to provide retirement income.
