Frequently asked pension questions in Ireland

Plain-English answers, with a route to more detailed information.

How much should I contribute?

Your age, affordability, employer contributions and retirement goals all matter. A tax-relief limit is not a recommendation to contribute the maximum.

Can I have more than one pension?

Yes. Whether to combine arrangements depends on their benefits, costs, guarantees, investment choices and retirement rules.

Can I transfer an old workplace pension?

Transfer options may be available, but valuable benefits can be lost. Compare the current and proposed arrangements before making a decision.

What is a PRSA?

A Personal Retirement Savings Account is an individual pension contract that can receive personal and, where applicable, employer contributions.

What is an AVC?

An Additional Voluntary Contribution supplements occupational pension benefits, subject to scheme and tax rules.

What is a Master Trust?

An occupational pension arrangement used by multiple employers with a common trustee and governance structure.

What is an ARF?

An Approved Retirement Fund is a post-retirement investment arrangement available in certain circumstances. Its value and income are not guaranteed.

Does a contribution reduce USC or PRSI?

Employee pension contributions generally receive Income Tax relief, not USC or PRSI relief.

Can my company pay into my PRSA?

Yes, but employer-limit and BIK rules need to be considered separately from personal contribution relief.

Is the lowest-fee pension always best?

No. Risk, investment options, service, guarantees, contribution flexibility and retirement benefits also matter.
